rules for assessed essays for specialist courses

What follows is the official departmental set of instructions about handing in assessed essays. The deadline for specialist courses (such as Theories of the Mind and Literature and the Internet) is by 12.30pm on the last day of semester 2 (Friday 28 March 2003).

Please note the following:

1 . All classified and required essays must be handed in to the secretaries on the day of the deadline by 12.30 pm; all essays received after 12.30pm will be considered late. Please do not leave handing in your essay till the last minute: essays of students who are still queuing at 12.30 will be considered as late submissions.

2. Essays should be handed in at the collection-point on the first-floor landing outside room 155. Secretaries will be available from 8.30am to receive them. You must not hand your essays (other than formative essays) directly to teaching staff.

3. When you hand in your essay it is your responsibility to keep a back-up copy; this will be needed if for any reason the original goes missing.

4. In completing your receipt you will need the following information: student registration number, module title, module tutor, length of essay (in words). This length should include any quotations used in the text, but should exclude Notes and Bibliography. Essays will NOT be accepted where this information is not provided.

5. Essay word-lengths declared above MUST be observed. Any submission that exceeds the maximum permitted word-length will be penalised by simply having its excess portion discounted by the marker; work that is appreciably under-length will also have this fact taken into account by the marker(s).

6. Your essay must be submitted anonymously and your name must NOT appear on the front of the work nor on any subsequent pages.

7. Essays that do not follow the conventions set out on an appropriate Style Sheet will be penalised.
