1. Could all three groups please write a first paragraph of an answer to the following examination question:
3. Discuss the vision of the poet’s role and significance presented by Pope and/or Swift. You should focus your response on To Arbuthnot and/or Verses on the Death of Dr Swift.
2. Please read the Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot.
Concentrate on the following portraits:
group 1: Bufo
group 2: Sporus
group 3: Atticus
Please be prepared to discuss these portraits, and the whole poem, in terms of the following:
Dependency/venality/patronage/corruption/mercenary hack work
versus
Independence/virtue/retirement from the world/art for art's sake
