Literature Foundation 2009

Week 7

For week 8: Persuasion

For next week: please read Persuasion, and meet in groups to discuss the following:

Your exam question of the week is:

'There was never any burst of feeling, any warmth of indignation or delight, at the evil or good of others' (Jane Austen, Persuasion). Discuss the attitude to feeling in Persuasion and the literature of its time.

Hint: this is about the late 18c fashion for 'sensibility'. You all need to know about this. Further information here and here.

Please produce the usual first paragraph.

Please also discuss:

group 1: sensibility (in detail)
group 2: the navy
group 3: the aristocracy

You should concentrate on the novel's attitude to these three items, and also think about the role of women and their attitude to each.
