Theories of the Mind

Using Powerpoint

I'm very sorry but I won't be able to make this seminar time. Here are some instructions in lieu.

Powerpoint is extremely simple to use: start it up and play with it, and you'll soon work it out. For those who find this forbidding here is microsoft's beginners' guide to powerpoint, and here is a page of basic howto links.

Don't use microsoft's stock images, they are horrible. Do this:

1. prepare a folder on your hard disk called 'images'.

2. go to www.google.com and click on the images tab under the logo.

3. type in a search term, eg 'lacan', and hit return.

4. choose a suitable image from the array of thumbnails that you will be presented with, and click on it.

5. click on 'see full-sized image'.

6. right click on the image, and select 'save picture as'.

7. navigate to your images folder, and save the image there.

8. in powerpoint, select insert/picture/from file and choose your image; it will then be inserted into the powerpoint slide you are currently working on, and you can move it about.

Here is a picture of the great man in pensive mode (obtained by that method) to inspire you.

The best way to use powerpoint once you are used to it is to work from blank slides, inserting your own text and images. And the best way to give a presentation using powerpoint is to have lots of bullet points and images popping up one by one, and to talk spontaneously addressing those points, in short bursts; if you get stuck, simply click and go on to the next point.

If any of you want any more than this, do email me. And you can ask me about it next Monday in any case.
