Module Description/Content

This module is an extension of the first year lectures entitled 'Theories of the Mind'. It will give students an opportunity to take further any interest that they might have formed from these lectures in the application of psychoanalytic theory to the study of English literature. Its aim is to give them a set of techniques that they will be able to use anywhere else in the module in the analysis of literary texts. The module will examine the writings of Freud, Jung, and Lacan inasmuch as they are relevant to the study of literature. Its intention is to give a basic grounding in the theory and practice of the psychologies associated with each of these writers. There may also be an opportunity to investigate, compare, and contrast other theories of the mind, including non-European ones.

Key Learning Outcomes

(on completion of this module the student will be able to:)

demonstrate an understanding of the psychological theories of Freud, Jung and Lacan to apply them to works of literature;
present relevant material as part of a team.

Level 3: demonstrate the attainment of the above outcomes in more detail and at greater length than Level 2, with a greater degree of independent, self-directed learning, building on the relevant skills acquired at Level 2.

Level 2: demonstrate competence in the compilation and organisation of seminar-related material such as notes treating primary and secondary reading and summarising seminar discussion.
