B&P1 examination 1998

Here is the examination paper that you will see when you take it after the end of the spring semester.

This is an open book examination. That means that you can bring in a folder of previously prepared materials. This folder can contain any illustrative or reference material that you wish. It must not contain anything that you can copy out as an essay or part of an essay. It should be handed in to me before the examination, and will be given to you in the exam room.

This examination is intended to be midway between a normal examination and an assessed essay. Since you know the questions in advance, you will have time to prepare them specifically and in detail; but you must write the essays themselves under examination conditions. Because of this opportunity for specific preparation a higher standard will be expected than for a normal examination where the questions are unseen.

The examination paper

This is an open-book examination. Please answer all three questions. You may refer to material that you have brought in in a folder; you should hand the folder in with the examination paper.

1. Produce one example of good graphic design and one example of bad graphic design. Explain the reasons for your judgements in each case.

2. Take a work or works of literature produced either during the hand press or the machine press period and write on the relationship between the text and the means of production and/or publication.

3. The Internet is an entirely new, and different, kind of printing and publishing medium. What kind of literature is appropriate to it?
