The Theories of the Mind Lectures
Here is a set of pages that I have created
to accompany the six Lectures that I call Theories of the Mind,
on Freud, Dreams and Jung, and Lacan, as part of the first year
Texts and Theories course. The links become active once I have
given the lectures.
An aesthetic note: the Slides are set
for a small screen, 640/480, on a PC, since that's what is on
offer in the lecture room.
1. Freud lecture
1 and 2
2. Reading the
Dream 1 and 2: the Jung lectures
3. Lacan 1 and
2
The essay by Maud Ellman, 'Blanche', is to
be found in Criticism and Critical Theory, ed. J. Hawthorn,
PN81: it is in controlled access in the Main Library.
The essay by Catherine Belsey, 'The Romantic
Construction of the Unconscious', will be in controlled access
at the beginning of next term: watch this space if you are interested.
I also have a lecture on one of Freud's case
studies, and Lacan's reading of that book:
Freud Dora Lacan
Further Reading
If you are interested in the material in
these lectures, and want to read further, here are the books
you should read. I strongly advise you to read these books first,
and no others. Trust me: I've been teaching this material for
a long time... What you read after that is up to you, but you
may find my reading lists useful.
Freud: read the Introductory
Lectures on Psychoanalysis, and the New
Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis.
Jung: read the autobiography, Memories,
Dreams, Reflections.
Lacan: don't read Lacan. It makes no sense unless you have
some idea of what he's on about before you read him. Read first
Lacan
for Beginners.
Note: the links should take you to the Birmingham
University Library catalogue entries. If that isn't working,
the catalogue for those title entries. You can also find all
of those books in paperback. To check current prices and availability,
I recommend you do a title search in the online Amazon
Bookshop.
Here are
some links you may find useful.
1. If you are going to write an essay on
the topic of any of these lectures for the Texts and Theories
essay assessment, please read my essay on how
to write an essay. I have a very developed system for helping
students write essays, and if you read this first you will save
both of us a lot of trouble.
2. Reading lists
for Freud
and Jung
and Lacan.
